Lecithin is a phospholipid, one of the many contained in the cell membranes of all living organisms, whether plants or animals. The term is often synonymous to phosphatidyl choline (PC), which many in the scientific community use to refer to lecithin.

Lecithin, the Emulsifier

One of the many functions of lecithin is emulsifying fats. In the body, lecithin is present in bile, a digestive substance produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder to aid in digestion. It is critical for the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine and serves as a major route for eliminating cholesterol. The presence of lecithin in bile is primarily to keep the fatty acids from mixing with other organic molecules also found in bile, such as bile acids, cholesterol, phospholipids, and bilirubin. By acting as an emulsifying agent, lecithin ensures that bile does all its functions smoothly.

Lecithin, the Aid to Fat-Burning

Another function of lecithin is to help burn fat. When you eat fatty foods, the fat gets deposited in the liver, which will then break it down so the body can use it as a source of energy. If the fats are not properly broken down, they will accumulate and can become rancid producing free radicals that damage liver cells. Lecithin in liver cells helps facilitate proper functioning of the liver, particularly in fat metabolism.

In addition, lecithin helps keep fats in liquid form. That way, they do not cling to the veins and arteries and clog the passages – a symptom of the condition called atherosclerosis. By dispersing fat in the water instead of letting them stick to the walls of the arteries, lecithin aids the cardiovascular functions of the body.

The Role of Liver in Weight Loss

There are a lot of people who find themselves constantly struggling with weight gain for most of their lives. They go through yo-yo dieting, at the same time contending with sluggish metabolism and unbridled cravings, so that hardly anything ever works.

Weight gain is often due to poor liver function. With a liver that is in such poor health as to make it unable to perform its functions, there is a very likely chance that the condition will result in weight gain, especially around the abdomen, cellulite, and water retention.

The Bile (produced by Gall Bladder)

The liver is responsible for secreting bile. A complex fluid, bile (or gall) is a bitter, greenish-yellow alkaline fluid containing water, electrolytes, and a batter of organic molecules which include bile acids, cholesterol, phospholipids (lecithin), and bilirubin. It is critical in digestion, particularly in the metabolism and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Many of the body’s waste products are also excreted into the bile.

The role of lecithin in bile is as an emulsifier and antioxidant. It helps disperse cholesterol in and breaks it down into essential fatty acids. The phosphate group in lecithin makes it hydrophobic so it will always move away from water (which the area surrounding molecules are mostly composed of) while its lipophilic (fat-loving) head will move towards where the fats are. As such,lecithin helps stabilize the fatty acid molecules by forming a semi-permeable, lipophilic/hydrophobic ring around them.

Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet is based on the idea of eating like early humans.  Early humans ate whole foods, that is not processed and natural.  For me personally, I feel 100% more energy, lost over 12 pounds, got rid of my rash, and I look and feel better. 

Because I eliminate some of the groups of foods including sugar, junk and processed food, I end up eating more vegetables and fruits.  That automatically makes me feel so much healthier. 

In the book "It Starts With Food", it talks about how the modern day diet with tons of franken food have caused a lot of diseases.  It has testimonies of people who have cured high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes from just eating this diet.  (Disclaimer, I am not a doctor.  I am only offering my experience with the diet.  You should check with your doctor to see if this diet works for you.)

Here I share with you what you should eat and avoid in the paleo diet.  This is a partial list as it is impossible to list everything.  But it will give you an idea.  I would encourage you to do more research on your own online and otherwise.


To Eat List:

1) Meats and Fish
Any meats preferably grass-fed and organic.  Some examples of good for you meats include chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, lobster, turkey, eggs, lamb.  Some examples of fish you can eat include salmon, tuna, sardines, tilapia and trout.  If it swam, then it's a must!
NOTE:
Processed meats such as hot dog, spam, salami should be avoided as they are not whole foods.  They have been cured, treated, processed with chemicals and have high salt content.  None of which is good for your health.
For Fish, always opt for wild caught fish rather then farmed fish if possible. 

2) Vegetables
Almost all veggies are good with the exception of potatoes.  Minimize your intake for potatoes as they are high in carb and low in nutrition.  Opt for Sweet potatoes instead. Some examples of paleo friend veggies include avocado, carrots, spinach, eggplant, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts.

3) Oils
These are the preferred oils for people on the paleo diet.  Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil, Macadamia Oil and Grass-fed Butter.

4) Nuts and Seeds
You can eat most nuts and seeds such as flaxseed, sesame seed, sunflower seeds and almonds, cashews, and walnuts etc.
NOTE:
Peanut is NOT paleo as it is considered a legume.

5) Fruits
All fruits are paleo friendly.  But don't overdo it on fruits if you are trying to lose weight.  They contain natural sugar and can still cause weight gain.  One serving of fruit per meal is plenty.  Some fruits include banana, pineapple, dates, apple and grapes.

Do Not Eat List

Here I give you some examples of each food group that you need to eliminate.  Obviously, these are just some examples and not the complete list. 

1) Legumes
Soy, peanuts, beans, peas, lentils, chickpeasm soybeans

2) Diary
cheese, milk, yogurt, frozen yogurt, ice cream, cream cheese, and butter

3) Grains
bread, cereals, crackers, corn, pancakes, hash browns, pasta, pizza, oatmeal, quinoa, cream of wheat

4) Alchohol
Anything including beer and wine are not paleo

5) Sugar
candy bar, candy, chocolate bar, ice cream, artificial sweetener, soft drinks

Other Guidelines:
-Avoid too much fruits as they contain lots of sugar
-Avoid too much fruit juices also as they also contain lots of sugar
-If you must use sweets, use honey or maple syrup.  Those are paleo.  But again, minimize too much sugar!
-Too much nuts can be fattening.  Please don't eat too much but a moderate amount.
-Be aware of too much starchy veggies such as potato, sweet potato, yucca and beets
-Eliminate all soft drinks and processed foods.
-Do not use refined vegetable oils or Partially Hydrogenated Oils
-Avoid all junk food, fast food or processed food

Everyone has certain holidays they like more than others; Valentines Day isn’t one I particularly care for. Rather than talking about aphrodisiac foods and romance, I thought why beat around the bush (hmn wonder where that expression really came from); let’s talk about sex and weight. How does weight impact sex and sex impact weight? And what about exercise, does it give you a release or make you want additional “releasing”? For goodness sake, if I can write about bowel movements I should be able to discuss anything.

Fat and Sex

Being overweight can negatively affect libido. A study from Duke found that 30% of obese people seeking to control weight reported problems with sex drive, desire, performance or the trifecta, all three. One issue is the more fat you have the higher the levels of SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin). This hormone caper binds to testosterone. Dr Andrew McCullough director of sexual health and male infertility at NYU explains that high cholesterol and insulin resistance can also affect sexual performance. Both conditions affect arteries and can cause “tiny arteries in the penis to shut down, particularly when vessel-clogging fatty deposits begin to form.” I cannot imagine the impact to cardiovascular health if, instead of talking about cholesterol meds and heart health, physicians told men their penises would shut down. For the record, it’s not just men. “We are beginning to see that the width of blood vessels leading to the clitoris are affected by the same kind of blockages that impact blood flow to the penis.” The female facts were supplied by Dr Susan Kellogg of the Pelvic and Sexual Health Institute in Philly. The good news (or bad news depending) is that weight loss, in as little as eight weeks improved sexual markers substantially.
Sex and Weight Loss

If men would listen up if faced with a penile shut down, you say weight loss and I promise have a woman’s attention. I learned that kissing for an hour burns 68 calories but that’s not all that exciting. Sixty-eight calories isn’t even a snack and AN HOUR? I’m a busy lady. Sex on the other hand has a 200-ish per half hour calorie burn. Of course, without getting technical, as with any exercise intensity matters. Bystanders don’t burn as much. I’m not suggesting you wear your heart rate monitor (how sexy) but you may as well really go for it.  I’m not sure if it adds credibility but there was actually a book published on this subject  The Ultimate Sex Diet promoting the potential for weight loss via sex  (oh yeah and healthy eating too). This is probably best for those in a relationship because nobody wants to lose weight and gain gonorrhea. Husbands out there I suggest you use this information to your advantage. As I said, “not tonight I have a headache” could quickly be turned around with this valuable info.  Just be careful “honey, you need to lose weight and this could help” isn’t going to get you anywhere.

Exercise and Sex

For a variety of reasons exercise improves sex drive. Adrenaline energizes you, endorphins leave you feeling good and feeling fit can improve confidence and self esteem. Interestingly, yoga gets a lot of votes for the best exercise for improving your sex drive. Instead of theorizing about yoga and sex I’ll simply include this passage:
Yoga also improves flexibility making for creative positions such as splits and straddles.  Other benefits of yoga include an increase in blood flow to your pelvis which heightens sensitivity and increases desire. And yoga strengthens the pelvic floor which makes for stronger contractions and a more intense orgasm.  Yoga also clears your mind for a deeper understanding of you and your partner’s needs and desires.

However, this quick weight loss success was a kick-start for my weight loss journey, and it motivated me to keep losing weight, following natural and healthy methods later. I am going to share every single step I followed on the second week, that helped me to lose 10 pounds in 7 days.

Please keep in mind that extremely fast weight loss is never healthy.

Here are the steps I followed after the first 7 days, to lose 10 pounds in a week:

How to Lose 10 Pounds in a Week


1) First, I had a day of detox - to cleanse my body and lose weight even faster. I prepared a drink of lemon juice, ginger and honey mixed with water, and drank this detox drink during the day. Whenever hungry, I just drank it. I felt good, as I normally do, no cramps, no lack of energy, nothing. This was not hard at all, and I am sure it boosted my weight loss results. I know some people do the whole week of detox, but this is not for me.


2) I limited the amounts of foods, because I really needed to lose weight so fast. I had plenty of vegetables, lean meat, fish, eggs, and some fruits (mostly apples and oranges). My new rule of eating was this: half of the plate should be veggies (just tried to avoid too much potato), ¼ of the plate - white meat or fish, and the rest can be fruit (no bananas because they are too sweet and starchy). I know that eating less is not always an option for a long lasting weight loss. But it surely is an option for fast weight loss, and that`s what my goal was. An easier way to reduce the amount of food is to get a smaller plate. However, eating less was pretty hard, I admit. But I reached my goal, and I am so happy now.

3) I added 2 apples an one can of black beans to my daily diet. I had the beans as my main meal, or split them into 2 smaller meals and had with veggies on the side. This is a trick that no diets tell. And it works wonders, because 35 grams of fiber in a daily diet truly supercharges weight loss. These fibers clean the digestive tract and improve digestion.

4) I started to eat breakfast and stopped eating at night. 7 PM was the latest time of the day when I had my dinner. Breakfast boosted my metabolism and helped me to burn calories faster, although I never believed it could be so important for weight loss. It kept me energized as well. I got at least 10 glasses of water during the day, and I still do - water cleanses the body, increases metabolic rate, and does not let you feel hungry.

5) I distributed my usual calorie intake during the day. I started to eat 5 times a day, having smaller meals. This way I never had to go hungry.

6) I limited fat, sweet and not so healthy food, and whenever I felt like I need to eat something unhealthy, I moved those meals to the first part of the day. Because metabolism is higher in the morning compared to the evening, and this let me eat a donut or ice cream once every few days.

7) Instead of drinking juice, I had a fresh fruit every time. Juice is too sweet for weight loss, if you`re thirsty, get some water or unsweetened green tea.

8) I kept myself motivated and busy all the time. I know that when you`re busy, you have no time to go to the kitchen. This works wonders.
